Looking for a SumUp Loyalty alternative?

The main reasons businesses look for a SumUp Loyalty alternative are enrolment friction at a busy counter, missing language or regional support, and needing a card mechanic their current platform does not offer. If none of those apply to you, switching is rarely worth the cost of re-enrolling your existing customers.

When you should stay with SumUp Loyalty

If your programme is working, stay. Switching costs you re-enrolment of your entire customer base, and that cost is almost always underestimated. SumUp Loyalty is a capable product, and these are real reasons to keep it:

  • You already take payments with SumUp and have no plans to change
  • Your customers pay by card almost exclusively
  • You are in the UK, which Loonine does not currently cover
  • You would rather have zero steps at the till than zero steps at sign-up

When an alternative makes sense

The reasons to move are operational rather than cosmetic:

  • You do not use SumUp, or do not want loyalty tied to your payment provider
  • A meaningful share of your trade is cash
  • You do not want to ask customers to install an app before anything works
  • You operate outside SumUp Loyalty's six markets, particularly in the Gulf

What switching costs

Your existing customers have to be re-enrolled. Wallet cards are signed with a certificate belonging to the platform that issued them and cannot be transferred to another provider. This is a property of how Apple and Google secure cards, not a restriction any vendor chose.

Plan for a transition period where you run both systems, enrol new customers on the new one, and migrate regulars as they come in. For most independent businesses that covers the majority of active customers in six to eight weeks.

How Loonine differs

SumUp Loyalty is the strongest option if you already take payments with SumUp and your customers pay by card. Once a customer has linked a card in the SumUp Local app, rewards accrue with no scanning and no steps at the till, which is less friction than any wallet-card platform can offer at the moment of purchase. The trade is that the friction moves to the beginning: the customer must download an app and link a card before any of it works. Loonine has no customer app at all, works with whatever payment setup you already have, and covers 35 countries including the Gulf.
