Digital loyalty cards for car washes
The best loyalty programme for a car wash is a visit card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet rewarding every fifth wash, because the service is standardised, repeat-driven and decided almost entirely on convenience.

Why this works for car washes
Car washes are an almost pure convenience purchase with little product differentiation, so a loyalty card is one of the few available levers for making a customer drive past a competitor.
Because the service is standardised, there is very little to compete on besides location and price. A reward card introduces a reason to return that is not a discount, which protects margin.
Five visits is the right goal for most operators: long enough to be profitable, short enough that a monthly customer reaches it within half a year.
Weather makes this category unusually suited to push marketing. A wallet notification on the first clear day after a week of rain reaches customers exactly when they are thinking about it.
Why only five visits?
Because a car wash is an infrequent, weather-dependent purchase and a longer card would stall. Five visits is reachable within a few months for a regular customer and still represents real repeat business.
Weather is the variable to design around. A threshold set during a wet autumn will be met far faster than one set in a dry summer, so pick a number that works in your quieter conditions and leave it alone.
How does this work with a subscription?
If you sell an unlimited monthly plan, the loyalty card should not compete with it. Reward the pay-as-you-go customers and use the card's data to identify who washes often enough to be sold the subscription.
That is the most valuable thing a car wash gets from loyalty data. A customer appearing three times a month on single washes is a subscription conversation, and without a card you have no way of knowing who they are.
What should be messaged?
Weather and season, sparingly. A message after a period of bad weather or before a holiday weekend is timely; a monthly promotion is not. This is a vertical where the card notification has an obvious natural trigger, and using it well means using it rarely.
What car washes usually struggle with
- Almost no product differentiation beyond location
- Demand is weather-driven and hard to smooth
- Price competition erodes margin with no loyalty gained
- Customers are anonymous, so there is no way to bring them back
What we would set up for you
A stamps card with 5 as the goal and a free wash on the fifth visit as the reward. Customers enrol by phone number at the counter (they never take out their phone), and the card lands in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet in about three seconds.
You can change the goal or the reward later without reissuing anyone's card, so there is no penalty for starting with this and adjusting once you have real data.
