What is enrolment rate?

Enrolment rate is the percentage of customers who join a loyalty programme when offered it, and it is the number that determines whether the programme is worth running.

Enrolment rate is the most under-measured figure in loyalty. A programme with excellent features and a ten per cent enrolment rate is worth less than a basic one at sixty per cent. The largest single factor is friction at the point of offer: requiring an app install typically cuts enrolment dramatically, requiring a QR scan cuts it moderately, and enrolling by phone number removes customer-side friction entirely.

What is a good enrolment rate?

Above 60 per cent of customers offered the card is a working flow. Between 30 and 60 per cent, something in the ask is costing you customers. Below 30 per cent, the enrolment mechanism is wrong for your counter and no feature improvement will compensate.

Why does enrolment rate matter more than features?

Because the mechanic decides how much each enrolled customer is worth, and enrolment decides how many of them there are, and only one of those is usually the bottleneck. A platform with excellent analytics at ten per cent enrolment delivers less than a plain one at sixty.

What drives it?

Friction, almost entirely. In descending order of damage: requiring an app install, requiring account creation, requiring an email address, requiring a QR scan, and requiring anything at all from the customer at the counter.

The second factor is whether staff offer the card during busy periods. Any flow costing more than about ten seconds gets quietly abandoned during a rush, which is exactly when the highest-frequency customers are being served.

  • Friction: Friction is any step that stands between a customer and joining a loyalty programme, and each additional step measurably reduces how many people complete it.
  • No-app loyalty: No-app loyalty is any loyalty programme that does not require the customer to install software, typically by delivering the card to the phone's built-in wallet instead.
  • Stamp card: A stamp card is a loyalty mechanic that rewards a fixed number of visits, one stamp per visit (buy ten coffees, get the eleventh free), and is the digital successor to the paper punch card.
  • SMS enrolment: SMS enrolment is signing a customer up to a loyalty programme by taking their phone number and texting them the card link, so the customer does nothing at the counter but receive a message.
